Snuggle State
Say hello to my little friend, the Island Fox (Urocyon littoralis). This little guy came right over while we were eating lunch on Santa Cruz and plopped down 4 feet from us for a nap.
Each of the Channel islands' fox population is considered a separate sub-species and is small due to insular dwarfism.
The populations of each island subspecies have been considered endangered since the 1990s, when pesticide use creating breeding problems in bald eagle populations. Golden eagles, predators of the island fox, moved in without competition from the bald eagles and the fox numbers declined precipitously.
